In 1986, when the Tialas family moved from Towanda, Pennsylvania, to Forest Lake, Minnesota, Satin, the object of extreme affection from twelve-year-old Sylvia, slipped out of his cage when the family stopped en route at a motel in Illinois. The family searched the adjacent cornfields for three hours before Sylvia’s parents convinced their tearful daughter that they needed to resume their drive to Minnesota.

Many times that winter, the Tialases found their daughter sobbing inconsolably over the loss of her beloved Satin. Months later, a former neighbor called them with the remarkable news that Satin had returned to their old house in Towanda. The stalwart cat had accomplished his 800-mile odyssey in about eleven months, but he shunned the neighbors and resisted all their efforts to care for him. While Satin would not accept charity, neither would he leave the premises.

The Tialases made the trip back to Towanda to reclaim their wandering cat and to establish him once again as the king of the household and the master of Sylvia’s affections.
